Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the combination of Snakes andLadders media and Spelling Bee games in learning English vocabulary in class 8Aof SMP Muhammadiyah Aimas, Sorong Regency. The study used the one-grouppre-test post-test (pre-experiment) method. Data collection was carried out byproviding an initial test (pretest) and a final test (posttest) in the form of multiple-choice questions. The study was also included in quantitative research, with aresearch sample of 23 students in class 8A. The data analysis technique useddescriptive statistical data analysis, and the researcher used SPSS version 22 tocalculate the research data. The results showed an average pretest score of 76.09,while the posttest score was 83.69. With an n-gain value of 0.31, it means that theuse of Snakes and Ladders media with Spelling Bee was effective in increasingstudents' vocabulary. In addition, the results of the alternative hypothesis test (Ha)showed that Ha was accepted because the n-gain test score was more than 0.3, whilethe null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. The implications of this study were toincrease students' vocabulary and help the development of pronunciation andspelling of English words. Students were expected to learn well, leading to anincrease in their vocabulary mastery when the Snakes and Ladders game wascombined with a Spelling Bee. The research on combining Snakes and Ladders andSpelling Bee to teach English vocabulary showed that both games increased studentengagement, strengthened vocabulary, and boosted confidence. Snakes andLadders helped with focus, while the Spelling Bee increase spelling andpronunciation. However, the class became noisy due to students' enthusiasm,especially when losing or getting close to winning.
