Abstract
One important element in learning English is reading comprehension. Everystudent must be able to understand the texts they read to grasp the meaning andcontent of those texts. One of the most prominent issues among students is relatedto reading comprehension. The aim of this research was to determine the impacton students' reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 1 Kabupaten Sorong byapplying a combination of the scramble word game and make a match method. This study used a quantitative approach with 25 students from class X MIPA 1 atSMA Negeri 1 Kabupaten Sorong as subjects. The assessment instrument used bythe author consisted of 20 multiple-choice questions based on narrative texts. After analyzing the results with a paired sample T-test, the alternative hypothesisstating that the application of the combined scramble word game and make amatch method was accepted, while the null hypothesis was rejected. Additionally, the P value (0.000) was smaller than the significance level (0.05). This indicatesthat there was a significant difference in students' reading comprehension scoresbetween the pre-test and post-test. It can be concluded that the combination of thescramble word game and make a match method had an impact on students'reading comprehension. Through the make a match method, students easilyunderstood a text and creatively matched images with corresponding texts to forma complete story. This fostered cooperation and solidarity in each group.Meanwhile, through the scramble word game, students added new vocabulary thatgreatly helped in reading comprehension. The scramble word game itself was aword game in which letters were mixed up and then arranged to form a word. Theimplication of combining the scramble word game and the make-a-match methodsignificantly enhances students' reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. This innovative approach fosters a dynamic classroom atmosphere, makinglearning more engaging and enjoyable. It is applicable across various educationallevels, including elementary, junior high, and high school, with adjustments madeto suit the text context for each age group. Students reported feeling happier andmore relaxed during the learning process, indicating a positive impact on theiroverall educational experience.
