Abstract

This case study aimed to explore the students' perception and satisfaction when taught bynon-English teacher backgrounds at SMAN 9 Raja Ampat, with a total population of 114students, of which 71 participated in the research. The research utilized interviews andsatisfaction questionnaires as instruments to gather data. The findings revealed that studentsfaced challenges in understanding the material and teacher explanations, leading to a lackof successful achievement of teaching objectives. Students expressed concerns about theaccuracy of the material taught by non-English teachers, highlighting worries about thetruthfulness of the content. While the teacher demonstrated strong pedagogical competencein managing the class effectively, the lack of professional competence in English due to aBahasa Indonesia educational background posed communication barriers. Regardingstudent satisfaction, the results showed a range of responses, with no students feeling veryunsatisfied, one student feeling unsatisfied, and 12 students feeling neutral about theteaching and learning process. However, a significant majority of students, 63.90%,reported feeling satisfied with the non-English teacher background. Students' satisfactionwas influenced by the teacher's pedagogical competence rather than their Englishproficiency, with 18.31% of students feeling very satisfied towards the teacher despitelanguage challenges. This study suggests the importance of balancing pedagogical andlanguage competencies for effective teaching and student satisfaction in multiculturaleducational settings.
